Why girls should play chess

  • Confidence: every game is a series of independent decisions, and progress is clear to see.

  • Extra opportunities: girls’ categories, girls’ championships and women’s titles open more doors.
  • Life skills: focus, resilience and calm under pressure.

Opportunities for girls in chess

Where girls can compete

Opportunity What it means
Girls’ categories in open events Separate prizes for girls in many tournaments
District and state girls’ championships Selection path to national girls’ events
National girls’ age-group championships Chances to represent India at Asian and world youth events
Women’s titles (WCM, WFM, WIM, WGM) Milestones on the way to the open titles

Why some girls drop out, and how to prevent it

Many girls start chess but fewer continue into their teens. Common reasons are being the only girl in a class, fewer peers at tournaments, and less encouragement to compete. Small changes make a big difference.

How parents can help

?Find a friend or group so she isn’t the only girl in class
?Encourage her to play both open and girls’ events
?Celebrate effort and improvement, not only results
?Talk about role models who started just like her
?Travel with her to tournaments and make them fun family trips
